Flatwork Concrete
Liberty Public Schools Distribution Center
Project Overview
The Liberty Public Schools Distribution Center stands as a defining achievement for I-Solutions’ Concrete Division, marking its first major commercial project and establishing a benchmark for performance, innovation, and quality. With a contract value of $1.2 million, this project showcased I-Solutions’ ability to self-perform complex concrete scopes while delivering precision, efficiency, and safety on an active, constrained site.
I-Solutions was responsible for a comprehensive concrete package that included both structural and site elements. The scope encompassed structural footings, approximately 250 linear feet of cast-in-place concrete walls, 27,000 square feet of slab-on-grade, 2,600 square feet of slab-on metal-deck, and extensive site concrete improvements. These improvements included nearly 40,000 square feet of 8-inch-thick concrete paving, more than 7,600 linear feet of both machine placed and hand-placed curb, and 8,650 square feet of sidewalk. Throughout the project, advanced laser screed technology was employed to achieve consistent elevations, tight tolerances, and long-term durability across all flatwork surfaces.
A defining aspect of the project was I-Solutions’ pioneering use of a stringless curb machine, the first application of this technology on a commercial project in the Kansas City market. This innovation significantly improved layout accuracy and installation efficiency while reducing the potential for layout errors. Combined with laser-screed placement for both interior slabs and exterior paving, these technologies allowed the team to exceed specified Floor Flatness and Floor Levelness requirements, achieving an FF/FL rating of 70/50 against a specified 50/35.
The project’s complexity was heightened by its immediate adjacency to an existing, fully operational facility. Maintaining uninterrupted access for staff and deliveries was non-negotiable. I-Solutions collaborated closely with the project team to implement a phased access strategy that mirrored the final roadway configuration. Temporary access routes were constructed and continually reconfigured as permanent work progressed, allowing construction to advance without disrupting daily operations. This approach required precise sequencing, flexibility, and constant coordination, all of which were executed successfully.
Safety was a critical focus given the proximity to occupied spaces and public access. Clear separation between work zones and active areas was maintained at all times, with controlled access routes and consistent reinforcement of safety protocols. As a result of diligent planning and execution, the project was completed with zero lost-time accidents, underscoring I-Solutions’ commitment to jobsite safety.
Effective communication played a central role in the project’s success. Daily coordination meetings ensured alignment among all key personnel, allowing the team to proactively address scheduling, logistics, and potential conflicts. This collaborative approach fostered trust, accountability, and efficiency throughout construction. In addition, I-Solutions hosted a hard-hat tour with the Concrete Promotion Group of Greater Kansas City, providing an opportunity to review construction progress, discuss best practices, and reinforce quality expectations in the field.
Quality was always a focus for I-Solutions on this groundbreaking project. Beyond exceeding FF/FL specifications, I-Solutions followed KCMMB procedures for exterior concrete to ensure mix consistency, proper consolidation, and uniform finishing. These measures resulted in durable, high-performance concrete surfaces that met both functional and aesthetic standards.
The Liberty Public Schools Distribution Center is more than just a completed project; it represents the successful launch of I-Solutions’ Concrete Division into the commercial market. Through innovation, self-performance, collaboration, and an unwavering focus on safety and quality, I-Solutions delivered a project that exceeded expectations and set a strong foundation for future growth.
